At the automotive show in Berlin in 1933, the Zündapp Werke, GmbH factory, located in Nuremberg (Germany), presented a new motorcycle series—Series K. The letter “K” in its name was an indication that this motorcycle had a Cardan drivetrain.

Zündapp K 800-W

The Zündapp K 800 was equipped with a 4-cylinder, horizontally-opposed, air-cooled engine (20 h.p. at 4000 rpm), which had a very expertly developed, beautiful design, both externally and internally. First engine modifications had bronze-backed bearings in connecting-rod big ends and PALAS bronze carburetor; the camshaft was chain-driven. The first K 800 machines had engines with 18 h.p. rating. In 1935 the motorcycle was modified. Big ends got needle bearers, the generator is driven by fabroil gear having a rubber damper introduced into the system, but, most importantly, with a new Amal carburetor, the motorcycle capacity reached 20 h.p. rising to 22 h.p. for motorcycle versions that were using an acceleration pump. Also the shape of crankcase cover plates was changed, both for the upper cover and the one closing the carburetor.

Zündapp K 800-W

In 1934 the civilian version of the K-800 was modified for the Wehrmacht. The military version, K 800-W, was especially favored by soldiers, but this model had the following drawback: spark plugs got often fouled due to the undercooling of rear cylinders. The Wehrmacht had in its inventory around 550 K 800 model units. The Zündapp K 800 was and still is the only four-cylinder motorcycle used by the German army.
